iSleep Hotel has obtained the Biosphere certification, thereby becoming the first accommodation with an entirely bioclimatic arquitecture. The Biosphere certification, granted by The Institute of Responsible Tourism (ITR), establishes sustainability, quality and environment requirements. The ITR is an entity associated with UNESCO and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and is a member of the Sustainable Tourism Stewardship Council (STSC) of the United Nations. |
iSleep is the first accommodation designed and built following modern ecological construction criteria throughout its entire development process. It incorporates the latest advances in sustainable architecture, resulting in over 40% reductions in energy consumption vs. traditionally constructed hotels.
Sustainable Materials
Throughout the construction process we have avoided, where not strictly necessary, the use of materials harmful to the environment. Furthermore we have maximized the use of recycled or recyclable materials and favoured materials with low carbon footprints.
For instance, we have only used ecologically sound paints which do not contain toxic elements such as heavy metals, eco-friendly materials for the construction such as 70% wood-based panels and rubber produced from recycled tires.
Ecological Construction
With traditional building methods it usually takes 1 to 2 years to develop a building of similar size. iSleep Hotel was built utilizing cutting edge prefabricated modular technologies which reduce the entire construction process to less than 4 months. This greatly cuts down CO2 emissions derived from the construction activity itself, such as heavy machinery, generators, vehicles, etc.
Bioclimatic Architecture
The building incorporates various systems designed to reduce its energy consumption using natural resources, and up to 50% of the energy used is renewable. Three sources of renewable energy are used: solar energy, photovoltaic energy, and geothermal energy.
Some examples include, solar heaters, panels designed to ensure the windows are exposed to optimal levels of sunlight and underground galleries to freshen the air. Other aspects which optimize the building's efficiency include low consumption lighting and a high level of thermal and acoustic insulation.
